Overview

Sainik School, Satara, sited on the Pune-Bangalore highway, was the first Sainik School established in the country. The school was founded in 1961 with an aim to prepare boys academically, mentally and physically for entry into the National Defence Academy and Defence Forces, and provides education to boys from class VI to class XII.

 

According to a school spokesperson “The education provided by Sainik school has been molded scrupulously so as to ensure the cadets acquire confidence leading to self dependence, accommodating nature, high esteem and respect for the views of others, secular approach and an incessant longing for maintaining sound mind in a sound body which would ultimately make them successful in all walks of life.”

Campus

The school campus is spread over 115 acres amidst verdant surroundings and houses the main school building, NCC office, sports fields, cadets’ houses, staff quarters etc. The school’s main building houses  the administrative offices, well ventilated and spacious classrooms, well stocked library, well equipped laboratories, a multimedia hall,  6 cadets’ houses catering to the residential needs of 620 cadets, a well equipped mess, a well furnished auditorium and fully equipped and well furnished gym .

 

The school boasts state-of-the-art facilities for both indoor and outdoor games - besides 9 playfields, the school provides basketball courts, volleyball court, football court, hockey court, lawn tennis courts, squash court, boxing ring, swimming pool, parade ground and stadium. The school also provides medical infirmary facility with a doctor taking care of the daily healthcare needs.

 

For serious medical problems cadets are referred to General Hospital, Satara.

Accomodation

The 6 cadets’ houses accommodate 620 boarders in total; each house has a capacity of 104 boarders and is under the supervision of a house master, four house tutors, one matron / hostel superintendent and one general employee (janitor).

Academics

Sainik School, Satara, is affiliated with the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), New Delhi, and is also an active member of the Indian Public School’s Conference. In class XII, the cadets are required to appear twice in the Union Public Service Commission examination for entry into the National Defence Academy.

 

Extracurricular:

 

The school places a great deal of emphasis on extracurricular activities, preparing students for entry into the armed forces. The school boasts a riding school which provides opportunities for the cadets to groom their equestrian skills. The school is an active member of National Cadet Corps (NCC) and facilitates sports such as basketball, volleyball, football, hockey, boxing, swimming, etc.

Admission

Sainik School, Satara, admits only boys. Candidates for admission to class VI and IX are required to write an entrance examination. Boys of the age 10-11 years and 13-14 years on 1 July of the year in which admission is sought are eligible to write the examination for admission to class VI and IX respectively. For admission to class IX, the boys should have been studying in class VIII in a recognized school. Admissions are made strictly in order of merit.

 

Some seats are reserved for the scheduled caste/ scheduled tribe candidates and some are reserved for the children of serving and retired defence personnel. The remaining seats are filled up by open category candidates based on the order of merit. The application form, prospectus and sample question papers are made available by Sainik School Satara in the months of October and November every year.

 

Selected candidates are required to face an interview board at school and a medical board in the Government Civil Hospital. The final merit list is prepared on the basis of marks obtained by the candidates in the written test and interview. Admissions are provided on the basis of final merit list and reservation form.

 

Fees: the yearly fees amounts to Rs. 52493/-
