Overview

XLRI was founded in 1949, by Father Quinn Enright SJ, in Jamshedpur. XLRI began with courses for training trade union leaders in management practices in 1949. The school offers a full-time 2 year post graduate program in Business Management and Human Resources Management, a 1 year full-time General Management program (GMP), fellow doctoral programs (FPM) and many executive education programs. The college's GMP program, started in 1997, was the first full-time one-year MBA program in India.

 

XLRI features consistently among the top 5 business schools of the country. In 2012, XLRI was ranked No.4 among top 75 B-schools in India by Outlook India, ranked No. 5 by the 2012 edition of CNBC-TV18’s Top B-Schools in India, No. 4 by Business Today and No. 3 by Business World.

 

The PMIR (Personnel Management & Industrial Relations) program has been selected as the best 'HR Course' in Asia-Pacific. The school has also been recognized for its research acumen by London Business School and ranked among top 5 research schools in India, cutting across management and technical institutes.

Campus

The institute hosts a sprawling campus located in Jamshedpur with the scenic setting of the Dalma Hills in the north and the Tata Iron & Steel Company in the south.

 

The computing resources at XLRI include high-tech servers and workstations, a state-of-the-art campus network and 90 MBPS raw bandwidth WAN connectivity. There are high-end servers, which host the XLRI web page, Mail and SNTP server, Oracle, Lotus notes, SAS, DB2 and other software. Every student is equipped with a laptop/desktop in his/her room and has round-the-clock access to intranet as well as internet. Apart from the individual nodes, there are more than 500 units of latest Pentium workstations, scanners, laser printers or desk jet printers, close circuit camera, multimedia projectors, and digital cameras to serve the desk needs of faculty members, student's computer centre, classrooms, examination hall, auditorium, library and various administrative offices.

 

The campus houses two state-of-the-art auditoriums, both fully air-conditioned. The small auditorium has seating capacity for about 150 people. The Tata Auditorium, the bigger of the two, has seating capacity for about 1,000 people, and hosts all major events like the annual convocation, and performances in arts and music from the finest connoisseurs from India and abroad.

 

There are fields/courts on campus for badminton, basketball, cricket, football, tennis and volleyball. The campus also has a gymnasium and indoor sports facilities near the students' residences.

 

In addition to the facilities on campus, students at XLRI have access to swimming pools, tennis courts, squash courts, and a synthetic athletics track through its affiliation with local clubs and other sports associations.

Accomodation

Hostel facilities are provided for students of the residential programs. There are four hostel blocks of which two are for men and two for women. Each hostel hosts more than 400 rooms equipped with access points linking it to the campus-wide network and the various network resources and services.

Distance Learning Courses

The Virtual Interactive Learning (VIL) arm of XLRI offers a portfolio of 12 months consolidated programs in different functional areas of management. VIL offers the following 12 months academic programs wherein the students visit the XLRI campus for a period of 5 days for training, evaluation and certification.

Admission

Admission to the flagship programs are through XLRI's entrance test - XAT (Xavier Aptitude Test) and GMAT. After applying for XAT, the candidates need to individually apply to other member colleges which use XAT scores for their respective admissions.

 

XLRI has 120 seats each in its two-year flagship programs - Business Management & Human Resource Management, and 120 seats in the one-year General Management Program (GMP).
