The prestigious UK-based University of Southampton has opened applications for its M.Sc. in Sustainability programme - an interdisciplinary master’s degree designed to explore sustainability issues in both developed and developing societies and simultaneously address critical global challenges faced by them. The programme offers a solid foundation for developing futuristic careers in the public, private and third sectors, as well as national and international agencies working in the spheres of sustainability and sustainable development.
The University of Southampton is a founding member of the Russell Group and has a global reputation for leading-edge research and innovation. It is labeled as one of the top 1 percent universities of the world. It is also one of the UK's leading universities for general sciences with an international reputation for its teaching excellence and research activities.
The rapid transitions on global development front have time and again trampled our ideas for a development that is hand in hand with sustainability. Reckless activities in the name of development has led to an urgent call for action that is promptly being recognised by leaderships and foundations governing this world. Thus, the need for experts well-versed in the ideals and concepts of sustainability is continuously growing and is fast spreading in the developed and developing parts of the world.
The M.Sc. in Sustainability is an interdisciplinary programme, taught across three faculties at the university – Faculty of Social, Human and Mathematical Sciences, Faculty of Engineering and Environment, and Faculty of Business, Law and Art. It addresses key issues such as enabling population health and wellbeing in an over-stressed planet, delivering food and energy to an urbanising world, land use and land cover change, understanding the inter-dependencies between people and the planet and understanding the impact of climate change and weather extremes on people and places. The course is designed with flexibility to allow for a programme of study that is tailor-made to suit requirements and aspirations of individual students. It provides apt guidance on a wide variety of modules, which allows learners to specialise in pathways centered round consultancy, population and remote sensing & GIS. A constant focus on applied research and field-based methods provides sufficient exposure to students before they go out and face the real world sustainability challenges.
