16-yr-old Sarthak Jain develops touch-free doorbell to contain spread of Covid-19

April 20, 2020

With an aim to control the spread of covid-19 infection, 16-year-old Sarthak Jain, student of Modern Public School Shalimar Bagh, New Delhi has developed a touch-free doorbell. Sarthak developed the touch-free doorbell to encourage social distancing and ensure safety of visitors and people at home. It uses ultra-sensors that can detect the presence of a person within 30 to 50 cm of the doorbell and alert the residents with a ‘beep’ sound by programming Arduino. Arduino is used to build electronic objects by programming the circuit board using a software.

Talking about his invention, Sarthak told IANS, “Due to the corona pandemic, I have seen everyone wearing a mask even while they are at home or in their balconies. This compelled me to contemplate on all possible ways to ensure that this virus doesn’t enter my home. It then struck me that even doorbell can be one of the potential carriers of the virus and so, I decided to design a smart doorbell.” He believes doorbells are potential carriers of the virus and as it is used multiple times by multiple people throughout the day, the chance of infection being spread increases. He designed this smart doorbell hoping to save the world and thanked his principal Alka Kapur who motivated him.

The school also has an ATAL Tinkering Lab which provides a platform to students to explore and be creative. The school had shared a 37-second video of Jain’s innovation on Facebook and as showcased in the video, it intends to ‘break the chain’ of the transmission of the deadly disease. The innovation has been much appreciated by the internet users, classmates, and teachers. “Outstanding … This is the need of times …Keep innovating… Proud of you (sic),” commented Alka Kapur, principal, MPS, Shalimar Bagh.
