The Basic Education Department of Uttar Pradesh has taken a strong stance against 23 schools in the state capital that have failed to offer admissions to eligible children under the Right to Education (RTE) Act. These prestigious schools are now at the risk of having their recognition cancelled.
During a recent meeting chaired by the District Magistrate (DM), strict instructions were given to these schools to admit eligible students by June 15. Failure to comply with the directive would result in the withdrawal of recognition. Responding to the non-compliance of these schools, the Basic Education Department has compiled a list of institutions for potential recognition withdrawal and forwarded it to the Joint Director of the Secondary Education Department, Surendra Tiwari, for necessary action.
The Basic Education Department has conducted three lotteries thus far under the RTE program. Shockingly, the 23 aforementioned schools have neither granted admissions to deserving students nor provided any clarification regarding their refusal to admit students through the RTE portal and the department. As a consequence, the Basic Education Department has escalated the matter by forwarding the list of these schools to the Joint Director of Education, Surendra Tiwari, with a request for recognition withdrawal.
Under the latest lottery, which took place on Monday, the Basic Education Department allocated a total of 1,800 seats based on the received applications. The third lottery received 2,092 applications, while the first and second lotteries resulted in 12,954 seat allocations. Consequently, 14,754 applicants will be granted admission to pre-primary and primary classes under RTE Act. The admission process is expected to continue until July.
The schools implicated for denying admissions under the RTE Act are:
New Public School Pawan Puri, Alambagh
Lucknow Public School Near Icon Hospital, Jankipuram
City International School, Indira Nagar
St. Joseph’s Inter College, Thakurganj
Set Joseph Inter College, Faizullaganj Road

“The latest move goes on to establish the fact that the Basic Education Department remains committed to ensuring that every child in the state receives a quality education, as mandated by the RTE Act. It is hoped that the action taken against these schools will serve as a deterrent to others and reinforce the importance of providing equal educational opportunities to all eligible children,” says a spokesperson of the department.
