As many as 44 courses offered by several Indian Higher Education institutes have made it to the top 100 worldwide in the QS World Rankings by subject released in 2023.
This is against a list of 35 courses selected last year. This year’s courses are predominantly selected from the STEM fields, the 13th edition of the rankings released on Wednesday has.
Among them, in the electrical and electronic engineering stream, the Indian Institute of Technology (Delhi) stood at 49. IIT Madras has been ranked 98 and IIT Bombay at 92 for maths programme.
Two programmes from IIT Kanpur ranks within a 100. While they have been ranked 87 in the world for electrical and electronic engineering, they have secured rank 96 for computer science and information systems.
This year’s rankings saw 355 courses offered by 66 Indian universities being ranked. This is an increase from the previous years 299 entries. Among the highest entries are those from IIT Delhi at 27, IIT Bombay at 25 and IIT Kharagpur with 23 entries.
Ben Sowter, QS Research director, said: “One of the biggest challenges faced by India is educational – providing high-quality tertiary education in the face of exploding demand: this much was recognised by 2020’s NEP, which set the ambitious target of a 50% gross enrolment ratio by 2035.” “It should therefore provide some reassurance that the number of Indian programs featuring across our 54 subject rankings and five broad faculty areas has increased this year – from 299 to 355 this year,” he added.
Sowter also said that India’s improvement is the second best in Asia after China this time. While India improved by 17.2%, Mainland China showed an improvement by 21.9%.
Across the world, Harvard University has been the best performing institution with 14 of its subjects bagging the rank 1 spot.
