46% of Delhi poll candidates educated between Class 5-12: ADR

An analysis by the Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) reveals that 46% of the 699 candidates contesting the upcoming Delhi assembly elections have educational qualifications ranging from Class 5 to Class 12.

Another 46% of candidates possess higher education, with qualifications ranging from undergraduate degrees to doctorates.

The ADR’s report sheds light on the academic qualifications of candidates running in the February 5 election, offering a snapshot of the educational diversity in the race.

According to the analysis, 324 candidates (46%) reported having basic schooling between Class 5 and Class 12. Among the remaining 322 candidates with higher education, 126 are graduates, 84 are graduate professionals, and 104 are postgraduates. Additionally, eight candidates hold doctoral degrees.

Furthermore, 18 candidates have diplomas, showcasing technical or vocational expertise.

On the other hand, six candidates identified as literate without formal schooling, and 29 candidates are illiterate, reflecting the inclusivity of the electoral process.

In comparison to the 2020 election, the total number of candidates has increased from 672 to 699. Notable trends include a rise in the number of graduate professionals (62 to 84) and postgraduates (90 to 104), while the number of doctorate holders has dropped from 11 to eight. The number of illiterate candidates has also surged from 16 to 29, indicating broader participation beyond formal education.

The Delhi Assembly elections are scheduled for February 5, with the results to be declared on February 8.
