8 students injured in Kota hostel fire, building sealed for safety violations

April 15, 2024

In the quiet hours of a Sunday morning, chaos erupted as flames tore through the Adarsh Residency hostel in Laxman Vihar, leaving a trail of devastation in their wake. What began as a routine day quickly turned into a nightmare for the students residing within its walls. Preliminary reports suggest that a short circuit triggered the inferno, underscoring the critical importance of adhering to stringent fire safety protocols.

The Kota district administration, quick to respond to the unfolding crisis, promptly ordered the closure of the hostel in light of its non-compliance with safety measures and the absence of a fire NOC (no-objection certificate). This decisive action underscores the urgent need for institutions to prioritize the safety and well-being of their occupants.

As the dust settled and the flames were extinguished, the true extent of the damage became apparent. Eight students had been injured in the blaze, their lives forever altered by the harrowing ordeal. Among them, tales of heroism emerged – stories of bravery and resilience in the face of unimaginable adversity.

The injured were swiftly transported to Maharao Bheem Singh (MBS) Hospital, where they received primary medical treatment for their burns and injuries. Yet, for two students, the wounds ran deeper – one with burns across his arms, chest, and neck, and another with a fractured leg. Their road to recovery would be long and arduous, a testament to the physical and emotional toll of the tragedy.

For Bhavishya Dungeria, a NEET aspirant hailing from Chindwara in Madhya Pradesh, the incident left him with a debilitating ankle injury. Recounting the events of that fateful morning, he described the chaos that ensued as thick smoke filled the corridors, forcing students to make split-second decisions to ensure their survival.

Amidst the chaos, tales of courage emerged – of students bravely leaping from the first floor to escape the engulfing flames, their acts of bravery a testament to the indomitable human spirit. As the fire raged on, some sought refuge on the rooftop, while others attempted daring escapes through windows and walls.

Through the tireless efforts of firefighters, the blaze was brought under control within an hour, averting further tragedy. Yet, the scars left by the fire – both physical and emotional – would take much longer to heal.

In the aftermath of the incident, authorities wasted no time in taking action. The hostel, found in violation of safety regulations, was swiftly sealed off, signaling a firm commitment to upholding safety standards. Additionally, two other hostels in the vicinity, Gyandeep and Paras Jeevandeep, faced similar repercussions for their repeated violations.

As investigations continue to uncover the root cause of the fire, the spotlight shines brightly on the issue of fire safety in hostels across Kota. With thousands of establishments under scrutiny for compliance, the need for stringent safety measures has never been more apparent. The safety and well-being of students must always remain paramount, guiding institutions and authorities alike in their quest to prevent future tragedies.
