Eighty schoolgirls from classes 9 and 11 explored technology, artificial intelligence (AI), and innovation during the ‘STEM Mentorship Program’ hosted by the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi, officials said on Monday.

The initiative, now in its third year, aims to inspire young women to pursue careers in STEM fields. IIT Delhi Director Rangan Banerjee highlighted the importance of increasing female representation in these areas, stating, “This program is part of our efforts to bridge the gender gap in STEM education and careers.”

As part of the program, students participated in the Sci-Tech Spins lecture series, which introduces them to cutting-edge advancements in science and technology. A special lecture by the Founder and CEO of STEMBoard, a former NASA aerospace engineer, sparked their interest in space science and motivated them to dream big.

The five-day winter phase featured sessions by IIT Delhi alumnae and faculty on topics such as women’s leadership in STEM, AI applications in neuroscience, and algorithm design. A DIY workshop provided hands-on experience, enabling students to apply creativity and problem-solving skills in real-world scenarios.

“The program not only boosts confidence but also broadens students’ horizons by exposing them to the vast possibilities within STEM,” the institute said.

Parents and educators praised the initiative as a meaningful step toward empowering girls and nurturing future leaders in science and technology. The program aligns with the national vision of fostering STEM education and creating a diverse, inclusive workforce.

Building on this success, IIT Delhi plans to expand the program in future editions, providing more young women with the tools and inspiration to excel in STEM fields.
