Chief Justice of India, Justice DY Chandrachud, emphasized the need to expand law university education to remote rural areas, ensuring students from small towns have equal access to become lawyers. Speaking at the inauguration of Dr Rajendra Prasad National Law University, he highlighted that despite technological advancements, the current legal education system predominantly favors English-speaking urban students.

CJI Chandrachud expressed concerns about the lack of diversity, citing a survey indicating that students from varied backgrounds struggle to gain admission to law universities due to language barriers. He acknowledged the Bhashini software’s contribution, translating over 36,000 Supreme Court judgments from 1950 to 2024, aiming to provide access to legal decisions for non-English-speaking citizens practicing law in district courts.

Addressing the skewed opportunities in moot courts, internships, and competitions favoring elite families, he urged law colleges to redesign programs to cater to students from diverse backgrounds. Chandrachud also appealed to the university administration to adopt Hindi as the medium of instruction, ensuring that the best students from Uttar Pradesh excel in the legal field.

Recognizing the historical contributions of lawyers to the nation-building process, he underscored the crucial role lawyers play in representing individuals, entities, and marginalized communities, advocating for justice. The event featured speeches from notable figures, including Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, Justice Manoj Misra of the Supreme Court, Chief Justice of Allahabad High Court Justice Arun Bhansali, Uttar Pradesh Advocate General Ajay Kumar Mishra, and University Vice-Chancellor Usha Tandon.
