The Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT-Madras) has once again secured the number one position in the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) 2025 engineering rankings, marking its tenth consecutive year at the top. The rankings were released on 4 September by the Ministry of Education in New Delhi.
IIT-Delhi and IIT-Bombay followed in second and third place, respectively. IIT-Hyderabad claimed seventh position, ahead of IIT-Guwahati at eighth, while the National Institute of Technology Tiruchirappalli (NIT Trichy) was the only non-IIT to feature in the top ten, ranking ninth. IIT (BHU) Varanasi completed the list at tenth place.
IIT-Madras also topped the overall category as well as the newly introduced Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) category. In the universities segment, the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bengaluru secured the first rank, with Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) in second and Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE) in third. Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) followed in fourth place.
Among colleges, Hindu College, Delhi University, emerged as the leader, followed by Miranda House and Hansraj College. In the research institutions category, IISc Bengaluru retained the top spot, with IIT-Madras in second place. Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) led the open universities category.
Launched in 2015, NIRF assesses higher education institutions on parameters including teaching, learning and resources, research and professional practice, graduation outcomes, inclusivity, and perception. In the engineering stream, emphasis is placed on research output, employability, and global collaborations.
