Overview

The school was established in 1859 by Bishop George Edward Lynch Cotton. It is one of the oldest boarding schools in Asia. The mission of Bishop Cotton School (BCS), Shimla is to provide a sound all-round education for boys so that they leave its portals as men of honor capable of competing with integrity and strive to uphold the motto of the school (Overcome evil with good) in their personal and public lives.

It is located on a 56 acre campus about 4kms away from the center of Shimla. The main school was rebuilt in 1907 after a major fire in 1905 destroyed the building. Today, it houses most of the classrooms, dormitory for the senior boys, the box room and offices.

Campus

The 56 acre campus has a Chapel called as The Holy Trinity Chapel and considered as the soul of the school. The main building houses the offices, classrooms, dormitory for the senior boys. The spacious and dignified Irwin hall is where all the school functions as well as lectures, theatricals, debates and cinema show are held. The large and well furnished dining hall can seat the entire school at mealtimes. The Anderson library is well stocked with books on all subjects as well as latest reference books. T he school also has a well equipped gymnasium. The school infirmary is equipped with 20 beds, in-house pharmacy and two full time medical staff on campus who takes care of the medical needs. Visiting doctors are available for any sorts of emergencies.

Academics

This boys’ school offers the Indian Certificate of Secondary Education Examination (ICSE) and The Indian School Certificate examination (ISC) offered by the Council for Indian School Certificate Examination, Delhi (CISCE). The school offers science, commerce and humanities as the subject streams that are taught at the +2 level.

Extracurricular activities: The school places emphasis on the sports and encourages several societies and hobby clubs for its students. Football, cricket, tennis, hockey, boxing, squash, table tennis, air- rifle shooting, athletics and gymnastics are the games that are played at BCS. The students also participate in various inter -house, inter-school and national level competitions.

The school’s cultural centre encourages talent in music, dance, drama and singing. The school has its own band as well. Hobbies like aero-modeling, photography, shooting, golf, gardening, stamps and coin collection are also encouraged. SUPW is another integral part where students are encouraged to serve the community with programs like village adoption, teaching underprivileged children etc

General Information

Admission

Bishop Cotton School, Shimla admits boys from the age of 7 years onwards. All registered candidates are expected to participate in the entrance procedure. Offer of admission is based on merit rating and vacancy. Admissions are accepted from class III to class V. The academic session begins from 1st March and ends on 1st December. Classes VI-IX are non-entry points and the very few vacancies are filled by merit alone.

Admission test comprises of half hour written tests in English, Hindi, mathematics and general awareness. There is also be a reading assessment and a verbal and non-verbal assessment. Accommodation

From classes III to VIII the boys live in dormitories under the care and supervision of matrons. Each dormitory accommodates about 34 boys. From class IX the boys move up to the main school, and live in their respective Houses with all boys of a particular house together. They are under the direct control and supervision of their house masters, captains and prefects.
