In an era defined by rapid technological advancement and global interconnectedness, the need for future-ready education has never been more critical. The AFS BP Global STEM Academies Program stands as a shining example of how international collaboration can empower young minds with the knowledge, skills, and values required to address real-world challenges.
Jointly organised by AFS Intercultural Programs and British Petroleum (BP), this prestigious, fully funded scholarship initiative brings together students from across the globe to engage in immersive learning experiences in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM), while fostering intercultural understanding and a commitment to sustainability.
The Emerald Heights International School, has emerged as a proud torchbearer of this global initiative. Remarkably, it is the only school in India to have hosted the AFS BP Global STEM Academies Program four consecutive times since 2022. Over the years, the institution has welcomed approximately 114 international students from diverse countries, including Azerbaijan, Brazil, Egypt, Germany, Hungary, Indonesia, Japan, Mexico, the Netherlands, Singapore, South Africa, Spain, Trinidad & Tobago, the United States, and the United Kingdom. This vibrant confluence of cultures has transformed the school campus into a dynamic hub of global learning and collaboration.
At the heart of the programme lies the philosophy of “learning by doing.” The month-long academy is carefully curated to provide hands-on, experiential learning opportunities that ignite curiosity, encourage innovation, and build problem-solving capabilities. Students actively participate in interactive STEM workshops, explore emerging technologies, and gain valuable exposure to real-world applications through visits to leading institutions and industries.
A distinctive feature of the programme is its emphasis on holistic development. Each day begins with yoga sessions, instilling mindfulness, discipline, and a sense of well-being among participants. These sessions not only help students stay physically active but also enhance focus and mental clarity, enabling them to make the most of their learning experiences.
The STEM component of the programme is both rigorous and engaging. Robotics workshops offer students the opportunity to work on drone construction, automation, and cutting-edge innovations. These hands-on sessions encourage creativity and teamwork, allowing participants to translate theoretical concepts into tangible outcomes. Complementing this is the Sustainability Art Workshop, where students explore eco-friendly practices through activities such as upcycling, pottery, and eco-art—blending creativity with environmental consciousness.
One of the most impactful learning experiences comes from studying Indore’s exemplary waste management system. Visits to facilities such as the Devguradiya Waste Management Plant, the Gobardhan Bio-CNG Plant, and the Integrated Command and Control Centre provide students with valuable insights into how Indore has consistently been ranked as India’s cleanest city. These visits highlight the role of innovation, governance, and community participation in achieving sustainable urban development.

The programme also offers significant industrial exposure. Visits to leading organisations such as Pinnacle Industries and Force Motors enable students to understand automotive design, manufacturing processes, and advancements in electric vehicle technology. These experiences bridge the gap between classroom learning and industry practices, giving students a glimpse into future career pathways.
Healthcare education is another integral aspect of the academy. Through visits to Choithram Netralaya and the Indore Cancer Foundation Chatritable Trust’s Hospital, students observe medical procedures and interact with healthcare professionals. These interactions provide a deeper understanding of community healthcare systems and the role of technology in improving medical outcomes.
Higher education exposure further enriches the learning journey. At the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Indore, students explore cutting-edge research in areas such as plasma physics, drones, satellite technology, and cryogenics. At the Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Indore, they engage with faculty on topics like leadership, global trends, and sustainability, while also experiencing the institute’s serene Zen, Sound, and Spiritual Gardens.
Sustainability remains a central theme throughout the programme. A visit to the Jimmy McGilligan Centre for Sustainable Development offers students an opportunity to learn from Padma Shri Dr. Janak Palta McGilligan about renewable energy, organic farming, and sustainable living practices. This experience reinforces the importance of environmental stewardship and responsible resource management.
Cultural immersion is seamlessly woven into the programme, ensuring that students experience the rich heritage and traditions of India. A heritage walk through Indore allows participants to explore the city’s history and architecture, while visits to iconic destinations such as Maheshwar, Mandu, and Ujjain provide a deeper appreciation of India’s cultural legacy. Students also participated in national initiatives like the “Har Ghar Tiranga” campaign, celebrating India’s spirit of unity and diversity.
Another highlight of the programme is the visit to NATRAX (National Automotive Test Tracks) in Pithampur — Asia’s longest and the world’s fifth-largest vehicle testing facility. This visit offers insights into automotive research, safety testing, and technological innovation at a global scale. Additionally, a visit to the Lata Dinanath Mangeshkar Gramophone Record Museum introduces students to India’s rich musical heritage, adding a unique cultural dimension to their experience.
A defining aspect of the AFS BP Global STEM Academies Program is the concept of family homestays. By living with host families, international students gain first-hand exposure to Indian culture, traditions, and daily life. This immersive experience fosters genuine intercultural exchange, builds lasting friendships, and promotes mutual respect and understanding.
Throughout the programme, students not only deepen their knowledge of STEM but also develop essential life skills such as collaboration, adaptability, and critical thinking. They return home as more confident, informed, and responsible global citizens, equipped to contribute meaningfully to a sustainable future.
The successful hosting of the AFS BP Global STEM Academies Program reflects The Emerald Heights International School’s unwavering commitment to “Education Beyond Boundaries.” By blending academic excellence with real-world exposure and global engagement, the school continues to create transformative learning experiences that prepare students to lead, innovate, and inspire in an ever-changing world.
