Sightsavers India has provided assistive devices, accessible learning materials and training to children with visual impairment as part of its Inclusive Education Programme.

As of June 2026, 2,731 children had received information and communication technology tools and other assistive devices, while 5,968 accessible educational materials were distributed. A further 5,725 children received training and refresher sessions on the PLUS Curriculum and ICT.

The programme also trained 10,027 teachers to address the learning needs of visually impaired children. It equipped 12,759 parents and social animators to support them and sensitised 2,853 education administrators to disability inclusion.

Implemented in 15 districts across eight states, the programme supports the government’s efforts under Samagra Shiksha and the National Education Policy 2020. It provides Braille education, low-vision devices, accessible materials and technology-based learning aids, including smartphones, DAISY players and laptops.

Sightsavers India uses its Student Tracking Assessment and Reporting app to monitor students’ progress, identify learning gaps and plan individual interventions.

The organisation is also working with IIT Madras to develop accessible mobile applications, 3D-printed learning models, an AI-based learning assistant and augmented and virtual reality tools. These resources will be piloted through special education and resource centres in Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan.

In partnership with the National Institute for the Empowerment of Persons with Visual Disabilities, it has launched the Inclusive Practices Recipe Express handbook to guide teachers and schools in supporting children with disabilities.

During the 2025–26 academic year, 210 visually impaired students enrolled in the programme appeared for Classes X and XII examinations across 11 districts. Of them, 103 secured a first division and 75 a second division, while 43 scored above 70 per cent. The highest Class X score was 91.4 per cent in Madhya Pradesh, and the highest Class XII score was 93.4 per cent in Rajasthan.
