The University of Western Australia (UWA) has received a Letter of Approval from the University Grants Commission (UGC) to establish its international branch campus in Mumbai.

The campus is scheduled to welcome its first cohort in September 2026. It will offer UWA programmes while providing students access to Mumbai’s business, technology, finance and innovation sectors.

“The opening of UWA Mumbai is an important milestone for the University and for our relationship with India,” said Dr Diane Smith-Gander AO, Chancellor of UWA. “It is about creating new opportunities for students, giving them access to a globally recognised UWA education while they remain connected to the opportunities, communities and aspirations of India.”

Before classes begin, students will participate in AI Jumpstart, an introductory programme covering artificial intelligence, its applications and its effect on industries and employment. An orientation programme will also familiarise students with the campus, faculty, peers and learning environment.

Professor Amit Chakma, UWA Vice-Chancellor, said the approval was an important step towards welcoming the first students. He added that AI Jumpstart and the orientation programme would help them develop skills, connections and confidence at the start of their studies.

The Mumbai campus will also connect students with UWA’s international academic community and provide opportunities to engage with industry and emerging technologies.
