Artificial intelligence is rapidly becoming part of the world in which children are growing up. From the way information is accessed to how people learn, communicate, create and work, AI is changing many aspects of everyday life. For today’s students, artificial intelligence will not simply be a technology they encounter as adults; it will increasingly influence how they study, solve problems, make decisions and eventually build their careers.
This raises an important question for schools: How do we prepare children not merely to use artificial intelligence, but also to learn and grow in a world where it is increasingly embedded in everyday life?
The answer is not to compete with artificial intelligence. AI is becoming an unavoidable part of the world, and schools cannot prepare children by trying to keep technology out of the classroom. Their greater responsibility is to strengthen what remains distinctly human: curiosity, judgement, emotional understanding, creativity, communication and the ability to ask the right questions. In other words, as artificial intelligence becomes more capable, education must place an equally strong emphasis on developing human intelligence.
I believe the solution lies not in simply introducing more technology into classrooms, but in rethinking how children are taught to engage with it. Schools must help students understand what AI can do, where it can fall short and how to use it without allowing it to replace their own thinking.
Teaching AI Literacy, Not Just AI Tools
Preparing children for an AI-driven world does not simply mean introducing them to the latest applications. Technology will continue to evolve, and the tools students learn to use today may be very different within a few years.
What will remain important is their understanding of how these systems influence the information they receive and the decisions they make. Students should learn that an AI-generated response is not automatically correct. They must be able to question information, verify sources, recognise bias and understand that technology can produce convincing answers without necessarily providing accurate ones.
This makes AI literacy an important extension of digital literacy. Children should understand not only how to operate a tool, but also how to evaluate its output and use it responsibly.
In an age when information can be generated within seconds, knowing how to evaluate it may become more important than simply knowing how to find it.
However, there is another shift that schools will need to make. Students must retain ownership of their learning. Traditional education has often followed an instructional model in which teachers provide information and students receive and follow it. In an AI-enabled environment, this model becomes even less effective because information is already available at the click of a button. The goal should instead be to encourage students to ask better questions, investigate problems, challenge assumptions and take responsibility for developing their own understanding.
Protecting the Value of Learning
One of the biggest questions AI presents to education is not whether students can find answers, but whether they are still learning when a machine provides those answers for them.
If a student uses AI to complete an assignment without understanding the subject, the task may be finished, but learning has not necessarily taken place. Schools therefore need to help children understand the difference between using technology to support learning and using it to avoid learning.
AI can be valuable when it helps students explore unfamiliar concepts, obtain alternative explanations, generate ideas or identify areas requiring further study. However, the final process of questioning, analysing, writing and forming an opinion must remain their own.
This will require schools to rethink assignments and assessments as well. If technology can easily reproduce conventional answers, educators may need to place greater emphasis on discussion, application, analysis, original thinking and students’ ability to explain how they reached a conclusion.
The purpose of education should never be reduced to producing the right answer. It should involve developing the ability to understand why that answer is correct.
This also means protecting the foundational skills on which learning is built. Reading, writing and arithmetic remain fundamental, even in an AI-driven environment. If anything, their importance increases when technology can generate information and content so easily. Students who can read critically, write clearly and work through problems independently are better equipped to question, direct and evaluate what technology produces.
Critical Thinking in an Age of Instant Answers
AI is changing the relationship between students and information. For generations, children were taught to search for information. Today, technology can increasingly organise and present that information for them.
This makes critical thinking even more important.
Students must learn to question assumptions, compare perspectives, identify gaps in reasoning and distinguish between fact and opinion. They should be encouraged to challenge AI-generated responses rather than accept them simply because they appear confident or well written.
Classroom discussions, debates, research assignments, experiments and open-ended problems can help develop this habit of inquiry. The objective is not to make children sceptical of technology, but to make them thoughtful users of it.
A student who knows how to question an AI response is better prepared than one who simply knows how to generate one.
The Teacher’s Role Will Evolve, Not Disappear
The growing presence of artificial intelligence has also led to questions about the future role of teachers. I believe technology will change their role, but it will not diminish its importance. When information is freely available and can be generated instantly, a teacher’s role can no longer be limited to transferring information.
In many ways, the teacher’s role has been elevated. It is increasingly about connecting learning to real life, helping students understand context, encouraging curiosity and developing the emotional, mental and social qualities that enable them to become independent human beings. Technology can provide information, but it cannot replace a teacher’s ability to understand a child’s individual needs, recognise misconceptions, encourage deeper thinking and create meaningful human connections.
Teachers will also need to become comfortable with the technology their students use. Schools must support educators in understanding AI tools, their capabilities, their limitations and their appropriate use in the classroom.
The goal should not be to make teachers compete with technology. It should be to enable them to use technology where it adds value while preserving the human interaction at the heart of education.
Teaching Responsibility Alongside Capability
Artificial intelligence also raises questions that cannot be answered through technical knowledge alone.
Students will encounter issues relating to privacy, misinformation, plagiarism, intellectual property, bias, originality and the responsible use of technology. These questions are becoming part of the educational environment and cannot simply be left for children to navigate on their own.
Schools must therefore foster an understanding of responsible AI use from an early age. Children need to know why submitting AI-generated work as their own can undermine the learning process, why personal information should be protected and why information generated by a machine must still be evaluated.
Access to powerful technology must be accompanied by an equally strong sense of responsibility.
This is particularly important because today’s students will eventually enter workplaces where the use of AI may be expected rather than exceptional. The habits they develop at school will influence how responsibly they use these technologies later in life.
Preparing for Careers That Are Still Evolving
Schools also face the challenge of preparing students for a workforce that is evolving alongside artificial intelligence.
It is difficult to predict exactly which jobs will exist when today’s schoolchildren enter the workforce. Some roles will change, some will disappear and entirely new ones will emerge. Preparing students for a single, fixed career path may therefore be less useful than giving them the ability to understand new technologies and continually acquire knowledge.
This does not mean turning schools into training centres for the latest technology. It means ensuring that students have strong foundations in subjects such as mathematics, science, languages and the social sciences while also learning how technology can be applied across disciplines.
The future will require people who can work with technology without being limited by it. Schools must therefore prepare children to see AI as a tool they can question, direct and use creatively, rather than as something that thinks on their behalf.
This also means resisting the temptation to equate future-ready education with simply adding more technology. Schools may introduce robotics, coding, AI laboratories and other emerging areas, but these additions should always serve a broader educational purpose.
The objective should not be to fill students’ timetables with more activities, but to ensure that each experience contributes to the development of responsible, curious and capable individuals. In education, more technology does not automatically mean better learning.
Artificial intelligence will continue to change the way we learn and work. Schools cannot predict every development, nor should they attempt to do so. Their responsibility is to ensure that children understand the technology entering their lives while retaining the ability to think, question, create and decide for themselves.
Students who thrive in an AI-shaped world will not necessarily be those who know the most about the latest tools. They will be those who understand when technology can help, when it needs to be questioned and when independent human judgement matters most.
Ultimately, education must ensure that artificial intelligence remains a means of enhancing human potential rather than a substitute for it. If schools can teach children to use technology with understanding, integrity and purpose, they will not simply prepare them for a future shaped by artificial intelligence. They will prepare them to participate meaningfully in shaping that future.
