The Karnataka government has proposed reserving 15 per cent of government seats in professional educational institutions for eligible students who studied in rural areas.

The proposal is part of draft amendments to the Karnataka Selection of Candidates for Admission to Government Seats in Professional Educational Institutions Rules, 2006. The Higher Education Department notified the draft rules on September 5.

Under the proposed amendment, 7.5 per cent of government seats would be reserved horizontally for candidates who studied from Classes 1 to 10 in government schools or government pre-university colleges located in rural Karnataka and managed by the School Education Department.

Another 7.5 per cent would be reserved for candidates who completed Classes 1 to 10 at any educational institution in a rural area of the state, irrespective of whether it is government-run.

The draft has been framed under Section 14 of the Karnataka Educational Institutions (Prohibition of Capitation Fee) Act, 1984. The rules would take effect following their publication in the Official Gazette.

The government has invited objections and suggestions from affected parties within 15 days of the draft’s publication in the Gazette.
