The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) secured three of the four key posts in the Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU) elections, the results oh which were announced on Saturday after 20 rounds of vote counting.

ABVP candidate Yash Dabas was elected president after polling 24,576 votes, defeating National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) candidate Vijay Shankar Meena, who received 22,523 votes.

Riya Chhawdi won the secretary’s post with 21,650 votes, while Lakshya Raj Singh secured the joint secretary’s position with 16,615 votes.

The vice-president’s post, however, went to independent candidate Deepanshu Shokeen, a former NSUI member. Shokeen polled 30,615 votes, well ahead of ABVP candidate Ishu Maurya, who secured 16,910 votes. NSUI’s Vir Chatrath finished with 4,313 votes.

Following the completion of the counting process, university officials directed the winning candidates and their supporters not to organise victory rallies either on the campus or outside it, in compliance with directions issued by the Delhi High Court.

The DUSU has served as a launchpad for several student leaders who later entered mainstream politics.

Former Union minister and BJP leader Arun Jaitley served as DUSU president in 1974 before going on to hold key portfolios including Finance and Defence. BJP leader Vijay Goel was DUSU president in 1977 and later served as a Union Minister of State.

Congress leader Ajay Maken headed the students’ union in 1985 and subsequently served as Union Minister for Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation. Congress leader Alka Lamba served as DUSU president in 1995 and later became a Delhi Assembly MLA and national president of the Mahila Congress.
