The Union Ministry of Education conducted a nationwide screening of a 30-minute sensitisation and orientation module on inclusive education for Children with Special Needs (CwSN) through the PRASHAST Portal in schools across India.
PRASHAST is a digital tool designed to help schools identify children with probable disabilities covered under the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016. Its two-part checklist enables teachers to screen students using observable indicators, while special educators validate cases and facilitate referrals for medical assessment where required.
According to the ministry, the module aims to help teachers, special educators and non-teaching staff understand the needs of children with special needs and create safe, accessible and supportive school environments.
Available in 12 Indian languages, the module uses practical examples and interactive activities to promote appropriate and respectful practices. It is intended for school heads, teachers, special educators and non-teaching personnel, including transport staff, clerical staff and wardens.
The ministry said more than 72 lakh teachers had been sensitised through the module, while 60,000 schools participated in the nationwide screening. Participation is expected to increase further during October.
The initiative seeks to promote a whole-school approach to inclusive education, recognising that every interaction within the school environment contributes to a child’s experience of inclusion.
