Overview

The Cathedral and John Connon School is a co-ed private day school affiliated with The Council for The Indian School Certificate Examinations (CISCE). Founded by the Anglo-Scottish Education Society in Mumbai in 1860, the school now has 5 sections in Mumbai. Its pre-primary section established in 2002 is housed within the compounds of the St. Thomas Cathedral, Mumbai. The infant school is at Malabar Hill, the junior school at MG Road, the middle school at Maharishi Dadichi Marg, and the senior school at PT Marg.

In the 1960s, the boys’ and girls’ schools were merged to successfully solve the school’s financial and logistical problems.

Campus

Standing tall in Mumbai’s Fort area, the Cathedral and John Connon School has five sections:

  1. The Pre-Primary Section – established in 2002, is housed within the compound of the St. Thomas’ Cathedral.
  2. The Infant School at Malabar Hill
  3. The Junior School on MG Road
  4. The Middle School on Maharishi Dadichi Marg
  5. The Senior School, an impressive blend of Gothic and Indian architecture, on PT Marg.

The campus infrastructure allows for the students to engage in co-curricular activities through rooms built to organise cultural activities and games such as debates, dramatics and elocution. The campus also has fields and courts allowing students to engage in team games like soccer, rugby, cricket and basketball, individual games like squash, tennis and badminton alongside gymnastics, athletics and swimming.

Academics

The Cathedral and John Connon School follows the CISCE syllabus – English is the medium of instruction, Hindi is taught as a second language and Marathi or Sanskrit are taught as third languages.

The school also offers the Advanced Placement Programme (AP) (of the College Board in the United States) for students of Standards XI and XII and the P-SAT examination (of the College Board in the United States) for students of Standards IX, X and XI. This examination is conducted by the school once a year. This school is the only AP Examination Centre in Western India.

The needs of students with learning difficulties are catered to by the Learning Resource Centre.

The Cathedral Model United Nations is run entirely by the school’s student body over a period of three days, where students assume the roles of delegates representing countries. From a start in 1996 – the first CMUN had only one committee (Asia and Pacific Council), it has grown into an event with over 700 delegates attending. CMUN 2007 was the first to have delegates from outside Mumbai. Schools like Mayo College, La Martiniere Calcutta, Doon School, Modern School Barakhamba Road, and others attended the conference. 2011 featured the first international delegates from Rato Bangala School from Nepal and Aitchison College, Pakistan.
