Delhi will soon house 100 schools of specialised excellence to help students excel in their areas of interest and hone high-end 21st-century skills.

 

The Delhi Cabinet on Monday (March 22) approved the establishment of these specialised schools. Deputy chief minister of Delhi, Manish Sisodia said that these schools will enable children to specialise in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), performing and visual arts, humanities and high-end 21st century skills.

 

The Arvind Kejriwal-led Delhi government also said that all existing government schools would be upgraded to the existing Rajkiya Pratibha Vikas Vidyalaya and Schools of Excellence.

 

He said that these schools will be choice-based and cover classes from 9-12 in the 5+3+3+4 framework as specified by the National Education Policy 2020. Under the new school education system of 5+3+3+4 outlined in the NEP 2020, the foundation stage would span five years, the preparatory and middle stages three years each and the secondary stage would comprise four years. At the secondary stage, there will be a shift to a multidisciplinary system where students can opt for several combinations as opposed to just mainstream arts, commerce and science subjects. 

 

“We are going to live in an era of specialisation and excellence. Our children need an opportunity to be ready for next generation challenges. Every child is unique and gifted. We want to ensure that they get the opportunity and support to achieve higher success in their lives. Schools of specialised excellence will provide the right platform for our children to nurture their talent and excel in areas of specialised interests,” Sisodia said.

 

He added that these schools can serve as an example of how provision of the right environment and opportunities can enable even students from marginalised backgrounds to scale great heights of success.
