The World Health Organisation (WHO) advises children aged 5-17 years to engage in at least 60 minutes of moderate to intense physical activity every day. While some children actively participate in games and sports, not all have a daily regimen that includes exercise. A highly recommended physical activity which provides both enjoyment and fitness is rebounding i.e, bouncing on a trampoline.

A trampoline work-out offers a host of health benefits. For adults, it’s a safe and low-impact cardiovascular exercise that helps strengthen muscle mass. For children, bouncing on a trampoline offers good exercise and plenty of fun, and keeps them away from digital screens.

The US-based NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) deems trampolining “the most efficient exercise yet devised by man”. This NASA endorsement — quite proudly quoted by every trampoline owner in the country — highlights that rebounding is 60 percent more effective than jogging.

“A mere ten minutes of bouncing on a trampoline provides better cardiovascular workout than 33 minutes of jogging. Additionally, trampolining improves body agility and coordination, and is an excellent stress-busting activity. That’s why a growing number of adults and children are taking it up, and trampoline parks are gaining popularity,” says Tarandeep Singh Sekhon, chief business officer, Bounce Inc India, which runs Bangalore’s biggest trampoline park at Orion Mall. The company has budgeted Rs.100 crore to set up trampoline parks in major cities across India.

While trampoline parks have become popular and easily accessible in major cities with trampoline parties becoming the rage for themed children’s birthday celebrations, families can also opt to install small to medium-size trampolines with safety nets in home gardens and terraces. Caution: installation of safety nets is critical to avoid children being hurt.

Enjoyable workout. Jumping comes naturally to children and the rebound offered by trampolines makes this workout exciting and enjoyable. Trampolining also boosts release of the endorphin (‘happy’) hormone.
