Overview

The Yadavindra Public School (YPS), Mohali is a co-educational day cum residential school affiliated with the Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations (CISCE), New Delhi. Established on April 9, 1979 under the patronage of Maharaja Amarinder Singh of Patiala, the school offers education from nursery through class XII.

YPS Mohali is a member of the Indian Public Schools Conference. The academic session of the school runs from January to December.

Campus

The school houses two libraries for senior and junior sections, well equipped labs for computers, physics, chemistry and biology, two air-conditioned computer labs equipped with 60 multimedia computers and audio visual projection units for student, 40 Audio Visual classrooms and labs, of which 30 are equipped with latest interactive equipment provided by TATA Interactive Systems. The school also has a learning center for children with learning difficulties and a counseling cell, cafeteria and a medical infirmary.

The 10 acre school field comprises two football fields, two hockey fields, six cricket nets and three center pitches, three basketball courts (one equipped with flood lights), two lawn tennis courts, three volleyball courts, two swimming pools (one for seniors and one for juniors), 2 squash courts, a 400m track and separate areas for practice of shot put, discus throw and triple jumps. The school also has a multi functional indoor gymnasium and facilities for table tennis and two badminton courts. YPS is one of the few school to offer a three hole golf green.

Academics

The school follows the CISCE curriculum and offers schooling from nursery to class XII. The school’s academic year begins in January. For the senior school the first term focuses on sports and co-curricular activities and the second term focuses on academics with few other activities. After the mid-term exams, students are taken for camps and excursions in the summer vacations. The academic year is scheduled with sports and co-curricular activities again and at the end of the year, after completing all non-scholastic activities, the students prepare for their final exams in December. Extracurricular activities include paper recycling, pottery, cooking and serving to Bhangra, Indian classical dance and Western dance.

At the junior school level, English and math classes are held on a daily basis. Reading is vigorously encouraged. Extracurricular activities include art and craft, theatre work, Indian music, pottery work, various forms of dance and green club. The child’s performance is assessed regularly in all subjects and periodically reviewed and discussed with parents.

The sports curriculum is graded for each class. Athletic meet, cross country, inter house cricket, basket ball, hockey and football matches are a part of the sports calendar. Gymnastics and tennis are part of the curriculum, tennis coaching is imparted to classes I, II and III by certified coaches from the Chandigarh Lawn Tennis Association and from class IV onwards, tennis is optional.

Admission

The school’s academic year runs from January to December and admissions are conducted in November for Kindergarten and in December for classes I to IX. Admission is subject to availability of seats. Admission to class XI takes place between April to August. The school does not admit students to class X and XII.

The age eligibility for nursery is 2.5 years. Admission to class XI is based on the marks scored in the class X examinations. The school offers the following streams:

Science Stream:

Non-Medical – English, math, physics, chemistry and a fifth subject.

Medical – English, biology, physics, chemistry and a fifth subject.

Commerce Stream:

English, structure of commerce, principles of accounts, economics and a fifth subject.

Humanities Stream:

English, psychology, geography or math, history or economics and a fifth subject.

The fifth subject can be anyone of the following: math, computers, physical education, art, music and Punjabi.

The school admits only boy students in boarding and from class IV onwards.

Fees

The school charges INR 3,85,00 for day scholars as a one-time admission fee and INR 66,700 for boarders. The annual tuition fees are INR 66,000 for day scholars and INR 1,78,800 for boarders. Apart from the tuition fee, the boarding students have an additional fee of INR 12,500.

Achievement

YPS, Mohali has proudly played the host for the coveted IPSC tournaments every year, housing approximately 30-40 public school teams pan India. Sports training at YPS serves as the training ground for aspiring state, national and even international level players.

The school boasts affiliation with prestigious institutions such as Chandigarh Lawn Tennis Association, Punjab Cricket Association and Baichung Bhutia Football Academy in respective sports and ensures training at a professional level.

Accommodation

The hostel is air conditioned and divided into two houses that accommodate 140 boy students of class IV and above. The hostel offers a well furnished common room with facility for indoor games, a small library, TV sets and music system. Each student has a bed, a wooden locker, a writing table and chair to himself.
