Somaiya Vidyavihar University has announced the appointment of Prof Ajay Kapoor as its new Vice Chancellor. A globally respected academic leader, researcher, and innovator, Prof Kapoor brings over three decades of international experience spanning India, the UK, and Australia.
An alumnus of IIT-BHU with a PhD from the University of Cambridge, Prof Kapoor is recognised worldwide for his pioneering contributions to mechanical engineering, higher education management, and institutional transformation. He has authored more than 325 research papers, three books, and several patents. Ranked among the top 2% of scientists globally by Stanford–Elsevier and in the top 0.21% by the AD Scientific Index, his award-winning research continues to make a significant global impact.
Prof Kapoor has previously served as Vice Chancellor of Chinmaya Vishwa Vidyapeeth, Pro Vice Chancellor at Swinburne University of Technology (Australia), and held senior academic positions at the Universities of Newcastle, Sheffield, and Leicester in the UK. He is also a member of the editorial board of the IMechE Journal of Rail and Rapid Transit.
Recipient of the Sir George Julius Award and the TA Stewart-Dyer–FH Trevethick Award from the UK’s Institute of Mechanical Engineers, Prof Kapoor has been recognised for his outstanding contributions to mechanical engineering and academic leadership.
Expressing his vision for the university, Prof Kapoor said he aims to nurture a vibrant academic ecosystem that promotes curiosity, interdisciplinary research, and innovation-led learning.
