Anna University, Chennai is a technical university that offers higher education in engineering, technology and allied sciences. Founded on September 4, 1978 the university is named after C N Annadurai, former chief minister of Tamil Nadu. The university not only promotes research and disseminating knowledge but also fosters cooperation between the academic and industrial communities. Anna University was formed by bringing together and integrating two well-known technical institutions in the city of Madras namely – College of Engineering, Guindy – one of the oldest engineering institutions in the country and Madras Institute of Technology, Chrompet, three technological departments of the University of Madras, Alagappa College of Technology and School of Architecture and Planning (SAP).
Anna University (AU) became an affiliating university in 2001, absorbing about 426 self-financing engineering colleges, six government colleges and three government-aided engineering colleges located in various parts of Tamilnadu. In 2007, the university was split into six constituent universities namely Chennai (campus), Chennai, Coimbatore, Madurai, Tiruchirappalli and Tirunelveli. In September 14, 2011, the constituents were merged back to a single affiliating university for engineering colleges in Tamil Nadu. The main university campus is located in Guindy, Chennai.
The university also runs engineering colleges at Villupuram, Tindivanam, Arani and Kanchipuram in Chennai region, Erode and Bargur in Coimbatore region, Panruti, Pattukkottai, Thirukkuvalai and Ariyalur in Tiruchirapalli region, Ramanathapuram and Dindigul in Madura region, Nagercoil and Thoothukudi in Tirunelveli region.
Anna University is an affiliate of the Association of Indian Universities, the Association of Commonwealth Universities and a partner of UNESCO International Center for Engineering Education (UICEE). UGC has accredited Anna University with five star status in 2002 for excellence in technical education.
Located in the southern part of the city (Chennai), the university’s main campus sprawls over 247 acres skirting the Adyar River in the north and Raj Bhavan in the south. Extending over 49 acres, the Madras Institute of Technology at Chrompet constitutes the second campus of the university. The two campuses are dotted with several well-designed buildings that house excellent facilities for students and staff. The university also has a third campus at Taramani that sprawls over 197 acres.
