Apostolic Carmel High School, Bandra, Mumbai is a day school for girls affiliated with the Maharashtra Secondary Education Board. The school was founded by Sister Theodosia and the then Archbishop of Bombay, Valerian Cardinal Gracias with an aim to transfer the girls section of St.Andrew’s High School under the care of the Carmel Sisters and the first admissions started in 1953.In 1974, The Gyan Seva Samiti was established as a society and trust to govern the school.
The school strives to encourage its students to plunge into the depths of knowledge, and thus be empowered to live their lives to the fullest.
The school campus hosts spacious class rooms, a well-stocked library, well equipped labs for biology, physics and chemistry, a home science lab, computer lab, mini auditorium, AV room, knowledge centre, a canteen and an open hall cum lunchroom. The school also hosts fields for hockey, volleyball, basketball and athletics.
At the pre-primary level, the Play way method of learning is followed; teachers use flash cards and picture reading to help the students grasp new concepts.Mathematics is taught through alternative methods using beads, dice and pocket and environmental studies is introduced through storytelling, conversation and craft, while jingles, number songs and cymbals are used to improve the concentration levels. English, mathematics and environmental studies are taught in an integrated manner and music is used to explore and learn acceptable behavioural patterns.
At the primary level (classes I to IV), emphasis is on conversational skills, reading, writing and mental math. Extracurricular activities such as fancy dress, singing, flower arrangement, salad making art and craft, poetry and sports are offered to develop and nurture creativity among students. All subjects have worksheets to help children understand the topics better and classrooms are equipped with smart boards that are used to impart course content using digital modules, children are also given projects to be done in groupsin the classroom andunder the teacher’s supervision to learn concepts of each subject as well as build the spirit of team work.
At the secondary level (classes V to X), education is more formal and the curriculum is focused towards preparing students to learn specific subjects and equip them for the SSC board exams. The school offers Hindi and Marathi as second and third languages for classes V to X. Emphasis is laid on disciplining and encouraging students to perform role-plays, make projects, grasp the practical knowledge of the subject and promote creativity through prose and poetry pieces created by the students.
The school also has a junior college that started in 2012and offers arts, science andcommerce streams.
