As cyclone Michaung intensified into a severe cyclonic storm on Monday and is set to make landfall on Tuesday, schools, and colleges across affected areas in Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh have remained shut.
On Monday, schools, and colleges in parts of Tamil Nadu including Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram and Chengalpet districts remained shut following forecasts of heavy rain due to Cyclone Michaung.
On Monday, Chennai suffered power cuts owing to severe flooding prompted by the downpour and stormy weather conditions. A massive downpour created flood-like conditions, bringing life to a grinding halt in the south Indian City as Michaung intensified into a severe cyclonic storm.
The cyclone is expected to make landfall on December 5 between Nellore and Machilipatnam in Andhra Pradesh.
On Monday, as many as 33 Chennai-bound flights were diverted to Bengaluru due to the extreme weather conditions.
While a public holiday has been declared in three districts in Tamil Nadu – Chennai, Tiruvallur and Kancheepuram, Andhra Pradesh chief minister Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy called a review meeting with district collectors on Monday for an update on the situation in the state. Tirupati, Nellore, Prakasam, Bapatla, Krishna, West Godavari, Konaseema and Kakinada have been put on high alert and a holiday has been declared.
