Ashoka University students demand VC sever ties with Tel Aviv University

Ashoka University to fundraise Rs1500 crore for expansion

Ashoka University students have joined the global outcry against the conflict in Gaza, calling on the vice-chancellor to terminate all academic and research collaborations with Tel Aviv University in Israel. The student government, representing the student body, expressed concern that partnerships with institutions involved in human rights violations undermine the university’s commitment to justice and human rights.

In a letter to the vice-chancellor, the students highlighted the ongoing crisis in Palestine, citing casualties and injuries resulting from the Israeli military’s actions in Gaza. They referenced protests at other universities, such as Columbia University, as examples of solidarity with Palestinians.

The students raised alarm over Ashoka University’s research partnerships, faculty visits, student exchanges, and joint programs with Tel Aviv University. They accused Tel Aviv University of having close ties with the Israeli military and supporting the occupation of Palestinian territories, citing ethical concerns.

Furthermore, the students denounced Tel Aviv University’s collaboration with Israeli weapons manufacturers and its alleged involvement in drafting military doctrines. They emphasized the importance of upholding academic freedom, social justice, and human rights in academic partnerships.

The petition also highlighted the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) movement, which calls for boycotting companies implicated in the Gaza conflict. The students underscored the destruction of Palestinian universities by Israeli forces and criticized Tel Aviv University for allegedly stifling Palestinian scholarly work.

In conclusion, the students urged Ashoka University to sever ties with Tel Aviv University to demonstrate its commitment to ethical conduct and human rights in the face of international concerns over the Gaza conflict.
