Habitat: Historically, western Asia, the Middle East and north India. Now only in India – the Gir forest.
Other facts:
- Male Asiatic lions weigh up to 190 kg and lionesses weigh up to 120 kg. Height is up to 3.5 ft and length 2.92m. They can run at a speed of 59 km per hour.
- A group of 30 or more lions is called pride. Lions are the only cats that live in groups. Lionesses are the main hunters.
- Their roar can be heard up to nine km away.
- The Asiatic lion’s fur colour ranges from ruddy-tawny, heavily speckled with black, to sandy or grey, sometimes with a silvery sheen.
