Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on Wednesday that nearly 95,000 students from underprivileged backgrounds in Assam have received free admission to higher education, spanning from Class 11 through post-graduation.
Under the ‘Pragyan Bharati Scheme,’ Sarma allocated Rs 68.44 crore to 349 colleges and universities to cover admission fees for courses in arts, science, and commerce at higher secondary, undergraduate, and postgraduate levels.
Speaking at an official event, Sarma highlighted the scheme’s aim to foster inclusivity and empower students from disadvantaged communities. In the first phase of the 2024-25 academic year, 94,838 students from low and middle-income families benefited, receiving a total disbursement of Rs 68.44 crore. The initial phase of admission fee payments was completed on Wednesday, with subsequent payments contingent upon document verification.
Sarma also announced that the next round of spot admissions and fee waivers for the 3rd and 5th semesters, applicable to both CUET and non-CUET candidates, would be processed in September.
Education Minister Ranoj Pegu noted recent updates to the scheme, including an increase in the income eligibility threshold from Rs 2 lakh to Rs 4 lakh per annum. Ration cards are now accepted as proof of family income, replacing the previous requirement for income certificates.
Since its inception, the Pragyan Bharati Scheme has benefited a total of 22,30,257 students, with Rs 826.36 crore disbursed by the end of the last academic year, according to officials.
