Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has announced plans to address irregularities in the distribution of school uniforms to students, stating that police cases will be filed against those responsible. The Chief Minister revealed this during the Question Hour in the Assam Assembly, mentioning that action will be taken after the Lok Sabha elections due to reported anomalies in school uniform provisions across the state.
The government allocates funds to provide school uniforms free of cost to students. However, Chief Minister Sarma expressed concerns about disparities in the quality of uniforms observed during his visits to various schools. He highlighted the discrepancy, noting that while some school managements use funds appropriately, others do not.
Sarma emphasized the government’s goal for the current year to ensure high-quality uniforms for every student in Assam. To achieve this, he urged all Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs) to visit schools in their respective areas and assess the quality of uniforms. Schools receiving a ‘C’ grade in this evaluation should be reported to the authorities for further action.
The Chief Minister underlined the government’s commitment to rectify the system, promising not only improved uniform quality but also hygienic mid-day meals for students. Sarma announced that FIRs (First Information Reports) would be filed against irregularities and those involved in such practices. However, the initiation of corrective measures is expected to take place after the conclusion of the Lok Sabha elections.
The issue was brought up during a discussion on irregularities in the mid-day meal scheme, prompted by a question from BJP legislator Dharmeswar Konwar and raised by AIUDF MLA Rafiqul Islam.
