Assam will soon become country’s medical education hub: Himanta

Himanta Biswa Sarma

As the inaugural academic sessions of three new medical colleges in Assam commenced, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma emphasized their potential to increase the availability of doctors in government hospitals, thereby enhancing the state’s healthcare system. These colleges will evolve into comprehensive medical education centers, offering various programs, including nursing and dental courses, in a phased manner.

Sarma expressed his vision for Assam to become a prominent hub for medical education, with plans for 2,000 MBBS seats and over 1,000 PG seats. He underscored the significance of these new colleges in producing more doctors annually who can serve in rural government hospitals, ultimately strengthening the state’s healthcare infrastructure.

Sarma highlighted the significant growth in medical colleges in Assam over recent years, with nine more in various stages of development. He aims to achieve a balanced ratio of MBBS and PG seats, a feat accomplished by very few states, by increasing PG seats to 1,000 within the next few years.

Furthermore, Assam is poised to emerge as a prominent medical education destination, as these new medical colleges will also house nursing and dental colleges within their campuses. Sarma encouraged aspiring medical students to embrace this opportunity with gratitude and dedication, emphasizing the importance of blending spirituality with materialism for personal and professional growth.
