Assistant professor raises funds for COVID-19 through webinars

An assistant professor at the National Institute of Technology, Karnataka has raised Rs 15,000 for the Prime Minister’s Citizen Assistance and Relief in Emergency Situations Fund (PM-CARES fund) by conducting webinars during the lockdown. Kolathayar, an assistant professor in civil engineering, has held three webinars on sustainable water conservation practices; earthquakes hazards, risks and mitigation; and ensuring water security for future.

The registration cost of Rs 100 for each webinar is directed towards the PM-CARES Chief Minister Distress Relief Fund (CMDRF). The interested participants can register by making the donation directly. Kolathayar said that the number of registrations crossed 100 in a couple of days for all the three webinars he had planned. “Most participants make a contribution of Rs 100 and some of cases we also accept participants who are unable to pay any money,” he said adding that the main objective of conducting the webinars is to raise funds for COVID-19 and also create awareness about water conservation and disaster management.

He also said that people from across the country and some from Nepal have participated in his webinars and they include students, faculty members and people from several industries. The webinars are being conducted in collaboration with the government and institutions like the Indian Society of Earthquake Technology, Kerala State Council for Science and Technology and NITK.
