Australia doubles visa fees for international students impacting Indians

July 2, 2024

Australia has more than doubled student visa fees for international students from USD 710 to USD 1,600, significantly affecting many Indian students.

This move has sparked outrage among student representatives, who argue that the increased fees will push potential students to choose other countries. Starting July 1, the new fee aims to generate revenue for educational initiatives like reducing graduate debt, supporting apprentices, and implementing migration strategies.

Education Minister Jason Clare emphasized the importance of maintaining the integrity and quality of international education. The Indian High Commission in Canberra reported that approximately 120,277 Indian students were enrolled in Australia as of August 2023, making them the second-largest group of foreign students.

Yeganeh Soltanpour, president of the Council of International Students Australia, criticized the decision, highlighting the added financial burden on students and the risk of rejection despite high costs. This has led many students to consider other countries.

Phil Honeywood, CEO of the International Education Association of Australia, warned that the fee increase could severely impact Australia’s USD 48 billion international education industry and drive students to the UK, which charges USD 900 for student visas.
