The results of 2024 West Bengal Madhyamik (Class X) examinations declared on Thursday showed a marginal increase in the pass percentage and schools across Kolkata and several districts said they were satisfied with the overall performance of students.
The overall pass percentage of the Class X state board exam has been recorded at 86.31 per cent this year while it was marginally lower last year, 86. 15 percent.
Figures provided by the West Bengal Board of Secondary Education (WBBSE), that conducts the examination showed as many as 1,18,411 students scored 60 per cent and above marks this year which is 12.98 per cent of the total examinees while 9961 students obtained the top AA Grade (90 to 100) which is 1.09 per cent of the candidates who wrote the test this year.
This year 9, 12, 598 students appeared in the Madhyamik exam of whom 7,65,252 passed the exam.
This year, Kalimpong, a hill district in North Bengal is the best- performing district in the state with 96.26 per cent success followed by East Midnapore with 95.49 per cent and Kolkata stood in the third position with 91.62 per cent.
This year Chandrachur Sen, a student of Rambhola High School in Cooch Behar district stood first in the exam scoring 693 out of 700 which is 99 per cent marks in aggregate.
Samyapriyo Guru of Purulia Zilla School and Udayan Prosad of Balurghat High School stood second and third scoring 692 and 691 respectively.
Announcing the results, Ramanuj Ganguly the president of the West Bengal Board of Secondary Education said like the past few years, this year too there has been a significant rise in the number of female candidates 5,08, 698 in comparison to their male counterparts 4,03,900.
However, the success rate among female students continues to be less than male examinees.
Siddhartha Bhattacharya, headmaster of Sukdevpur Quazipara High School in South 24 Parganas said that they were “satisfied” with the overall performance of their students.
“We are satisfied with the performance of our students. Most of our students are happy because they have obtained marks that they had expected,” Bhattacharya told EducationWorld.
Subhrojit Dutta, headmaster of Hindu School in Kolkata, run by the state school education department said the students of his schools were happy with their results barring some examinees who said they were disappointed with their scores in history.
“The overall performance of our students is by and large good. There are some students who had some difficulties with the history paper and they had reported to us about this after the exam. Some of these students have not scored very high marks in history,” Dutta said.
The 2024 Madhyamik were held from February 2 to February 12.
