Bengal: Minister uncertain about off-duty conduct after dancing headmaster video

January 6, 2024

West Bengal Education Minister Bratya Basu expressed uncertainty on whether there should be a code of conduct regarding teachers’ activities outside school hours. His remarks followed the circulation of a viral video allegedly showing a primary school headmaster in Howrah district participating in a cultural function, dancing alongside a female singer. The authenticity of the footage could not be independently verified by PTI.

When questioned about the video, Basu stated that it needs examination to determine if the dancing occurred after school hours, during school hours, or involved Rabindra Sangeet (Tagore song). He emphasized the need to investigate further before making conclusions.

The West Bengal Board of Primary Education is reportedly looking into the matter, with indications that there might be a code of conduct established for teachers. Responding to queries, Basu expressed doubt about regulating people’s conduct in the contemporary era, citing the evolving globalized landscape, changes in attire, and the proliferation of visual content.

He acknowledged the transformation in journalists’ attire, highlighting the shift from traditional kurta-pyjama attire to denim trousers, accompanied by mobile phones and recording booms. Regarding the appointment of teachers for specific classes in state-run schools, Basu mentioned that the matter is pending in courts, and recruitment processes would commence once legal matters are resolved.
