The Biden administration unveiled measures on Wednesday to overhaul school meals, aiming to reduce sugar and increase vegetarian options for millions of students, bolstering their nutritional intake.
Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack stressed the importance of nutritious school meals in fostering children’s academic success, likening them to fundamental educational tools. He emphasized the administration’s commitment to working with educational institutions and industry partners to enhance school meal standards.
Under the new plan, added sugars in school meals will be restricted nationwide for the first time, with gradual implementation by fall 2025 and full enforcement by fall 2027, addressing concerns from parents and educators. Additionally, child care providers will limit added sugars in cereals and yoghurts by fall 2025.
While flavored and unflavored milk will still be available, a cap on added sugars in flavored milk will be introduced by fall 2025. A majority of school milk suppliers have pledged to meet this requirement.
By fall 2027, schools will be required to reduce sodium levels in meals, but standards for whole grains will remain unchanged. The emphasis will remain on fruits, vegetables, and whole grains to ensure balanced and nutritious meals.
The US Department of Agriculture reaffirmed its commitment to accommodating cultural and religious dietary preferences while serving meals that cater to student tastes.
The initiative received support from various quarters, including grandparents like Mary Beth Cochran, who highlighted the impact of nutritious meals on family well-being. Laura Trujillo Bruno, president of Buena Vista Foods, emphasized the importance of reducing sugar in school meals and shared efforts to align products with updated standards.
Notably, Boston public schools have already implemented sugar limits and reduced sodium in their menus, showcasing proactive measures towards healthier school nutrition.
