Bihar’s first sports university, located in Rajgir, Nalanda district, has received recognition from the University Grants Commission (UGC), officially placing it among esteemed institutions under Section 2(f) of the UGC Act, 1956.
Inaugurated by Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on August 29, 2024, during National Sports Day, the university is a key component of the International Sports Complex in Rajgir.
A university statement issued on Saturday confirmed that the Bihar Sports University, Rajgir, has received UGC recognition, which now allows it to offer academic courses, including undergraduate, diploma, and post-graduate diploma programs in physical education and sports sciences.
The university plans to introduce several academic programs starting from the 2025-2026 academic session, including Diploma/Post Graduate Diploma (PGD) in Sports Coaching (for two or three sports), Diploma/PGD in Yoga, and a four-year Bachelor of Physical Education (BPEd) course, subject to National Council for Teacher Education recognition.
Recently, retired IAS officer Shishir Sinha was appointed as the first vice-chancellor of the university by the state government.
In line with UGC guidelines, the university will appoint an Ombudsperson within two months of starting academic activities to address students’ grievances under the UGC (Redressal of Grievances of Students) Regulations, 2023.
