Billabong High International School Highlights SDGs at ‘Matrix 2023’

Matrix 2023, the Annual Science Exhibition, was beautifully presented as a two day event on the 3rd and 4th of February by Billabong High International School, Noida. Highlighting one of the 17 SDG’s (Sustainable Development Goals), the theme of SDG 11-‘Sustainable Cities and Communities’ was well showcased through an amalgamation of activities within the precincts of the school campus.

The learners belonging to clubs ranging from the Expressions to Performing Arts displayed their skills through innovative projects, Powerpoint Presentations, role plays, self-composed poetry, mimes, documentaries, podcasts and videos, working models based on scientific expression and  interviews among a host of other creations to make the day engaging and fulsome. To add to the zeal even preschool learners of nursery and KG joined in through their earth song, role play, cultural performances and sloganeering to contribute towards sustainability.

The objectives of the event: To enhance creative and thinking skills of the learners, to understand the need to encourage sustainability, to self-reflect on values and attitudes in your community, and the importance of co-existing in harmony among others were duly met by its culmination.

The two day event commenced with an address by BHISN Principal, Sharmila Chatterjee, who stressed upon the power of learning-by-doing as the call of the hour, elaborating upon the school’s role and responsibility in providing the wings of imagination and change to its learners.

The Director, Jasmine Gandhi, emphasized upon the need to enhance experiential learning in the current times and also lauded the efforts of the teacher- mentors, staff and faculty to implement the exhibition smoothly while creating milestones in the process.
Day 1 of the event saw various schools such as DPS Ghaziabad, Greenfield School and other preschools visit the exhibition with much gusto and zest.

The enthusiasm of the learners reached a peak when they shared their common knowledge on Artificial Intelligence, solving of Math problems and giving suggestions on scientific models. Day 2 had a formal opening ceremony that was attended by the Guests of Honor, Tapan Bera, DGM at Indian Oil, Dr. Mona Kaushik, HOD at Indology in Sofia University, Bulgaria.

Parents too were part of the attendees and were deeply enthused about the works displayed by the learners who put in a commendable effort to address issues around the theme as also suggesting plausible solutions through the medium of puppetry, advertisements, radio shows, monologues, Nukkad Nataks, storytelling, animations, campaigns and comic strips. The senior learners devoted themselves to the cause through the medium of PowerPoint presentations with powerful underlying messages that brought topics as vast as sustainable urban development, blue and green spaces, safe and resilient cities around the world and safeguarding the world’s cultural and natural heritage. The event culminated with a promise to make the future more sustainable and develop holistic disaster risk management at all levels.
