Overview

Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani (BITS Pilani) is a private deemed university in Pilani, India, focusing primarily on higher education and research in engineering and sciences. After expansion to a campus in Dubai, it has become the first international deemed university, spearheading in science, engineering and research with four established campuses and 15 academic departments.

The Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani was a dream come true of its late founder GD Birla – an eminent industrialist and a close associate of Mahatma Gandhi. Over the years, it has managed to retain its place among the top ten engineering colleges in India. The institute, which started as a small school, gradually metamorphosed into a set of higher education colleges and in 1964, these regional colleges merged into a national university offering world class technical education.

About 150 large and medium sized companies visit BITS Pilani campus every year for campus recruitment. On an average, 90 percent of BITS students who are interested in securing jobs through campus placements succeed in doing so.

Campus

BITS Pilani, Pilani Campus is located in the Vidya Vihar campus adjacent to Pilani town in Jhunjhunu district, in Rajasthan. The Institute buildings, hostels and residential quarters for staff with neatly laid out roads, lawns and gardens constitute the BITS Campus of about 328 acres.

 The campus has 11,245 square metres of classrooms and 7,069 square metres of laboratories. BITS has a Birla Mandir dedicated to the goddess Saraswati, Sharda Peeth, built by G. D. Birla. The Pilani campus also has India’s first technological museum, the Birla Museum. Built in 1954, it showcases technological achievements. There is a 2,535-square-metre auditorium decorated with paintings by students from the department of art and decoration.

BITS Pilani is fully residential and hostel accommodation is provided to all students. There is a common kitchen cum mess unit for every set of two boys’ hostels. The girls’ hostel, however, has a separate mess of its own, situated within the boundary of the hostel.

The Institute has a student activities centre housed in a separate building where students have their union office and rooms for various activities. This building also has badminton courts, a squash court, a table tennis room, a health club, an open-air amphitheatre and a cafeteria.

The swimming club has a swimming pool of 25 m length while the sports club has various indoor and outdoor facilities for students to take part in sports and games.

Placements

BITS Pilani campuses schedule two placement seasons every year – one in August, and one in January. The institute contacts companies and corporations two months before the placement schedules. Rooms and facilities for aptitude tests, group discussions and interviews are made available for the placement drive, while logistical and other issues related to campus placements are handled by a group of dedicated placement committee volunteers.

2020-21 placement highlights:

  • 99% students, i.e, nearly 1500 students from BITS Pilani were placed out of which 173 pre-placement offers were recorded.
  • Some of the top recruiters included HUL, Linkedin, Adobe, HSBC, L&T Ltd, etc.
  • The highest CTC offered was INR 45 LPA (by DE Shaw) while the average CTC stood at INR 18.05 LPA.

Admission

Undergraduate Admissions

Selection Criteria: BITSAT scores and class 12 results

Eligibility: 10+2 from a recognized board with PCM with a minimum aggregate of 75% (PCM) and minimum of 60% marks scored in each subject individually

Admission Process:

  • Candidates have to apply for the BITSAT entrance exam and submit the application form for admission to BITS Pilani.
  • BITSAT is an online CBT consisting of four parts- Physics, Chemistry, English and Logical Reasoning and an option between Mathematics and Biology. The test carries a total of 150 MCQ’s to be completed in 3 hours. (+3 for correct responses, -1 for incorrect responses)
  • After appearing for BITSAT, candidates shall be shortlisted based on the merit list released by the college based on candidates’ total BITSAT scores and class 12 results.
  • Shortlisted candidates are allotted admission to various programmes depending on their rank. Admission may be confirmed with the verification of documents and payment of fees.

Postgraduate Admissions

Selection Criteria: BITS HD test scores | performance in university-conducted written ability test, group discussion and interview | GATE/GPAT scores | CAT/XAT/GMAT score

Eligibility: B.E./B.Tech./integrated degree in the relevant specialisation with a minimum aggregate of 55-60% marks with valid GATE scores. M.A./M.Sc. in relevant stream with valid GPAT scores for M.Phil. admission. Valid CAT / XAT/ GMAT scores for M.B.A.

Admission Process:

  • Candidates have to fill and submit the application form from the official website for admission to BITS Pilani.
  • After appearing for BITS HD/GATE/GPAT, candidates shall be shortlisted based on merit. Admission to B.E. is solely based on BITS HD scores. Candidates shortlisted for M.Phil. will be called for group discussion/test and interview.
  • Candidates applying for M.B.A. will be shortlisted based on their CAT/XAT/GMAT scores. Shortlisted candidates will be called for the group discussion, written ability test and interview, clearing which the candidate will be offered admission.
  • After clearing all rounds of admission, shortlisted candidates are allotted admission to various programmes, which may be confirmed with the verification of documents and payment of fees.

Ph.D. Admissions

Selection Criteria: Performance in university- conducted entrance exam and interview.

Eligibility: master’s degree in the relevant specialisation with a minimum aggregate of 60% marks

Admission Process:

  • Candidates need to enroll online and fill and submit the application form from the official website along with the payment of application fees.
  • Candidates selecting Physics/ Chemistry/Biological Sciences/Mathematics have to appear for two tests (one generic and one discipline-specific). Candidates shortlisted for Ph.D. in Management/B.Pharm./B.E. have to appear for one test. Candidates with M.Phil. degrees and/or fellowships such as CSIR NET-JRF, DBT-JRF, UGC NET-JRF need not appear for the test.
  • Qualified candidates will be called for an interview/viva.
  • Candidates will be shortlisted based on their performances in the entrance tests and overall academic merit. Admission may be confirmed with the verification of documents and payment of fees.

Fees: first year fees range from INR 4.24-4.93 lakhs.

Achievement

BITS, Pilani is accredited by National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) with A Grade with CGPA of 3.71.

BITS Pilani is ranked first in the EducationWorld India Engineering Colleges Rankings 2020-21.

The National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) ranked BITS Pilani 27 overall in India in 2020, 15 among universities, 30 in the engineering ranking and 6 in India in the pharmacy ranking.

Accommodation

BITS Pilani is fully residential and hostel accommodation is provided to all students. The institute has fourteen hostels (“Bhawans”) in total. Thirteen of them – Krishna Bhawan, Vishwakarma Bhawan, Rana Pratap Bhawan, Bhagirath Bhawan, Ashok Bhawan, Gandhi Bhawan, Shankar Bhawan, Vyas Bhawan, Budh Bhawan, Ram Bhawan, Pandit Madan Mohan Malviya Bhawan, CV Raman Bhavan and Srinivasa Ramanujan Bhawan are for male students. There is a single hostel for female students called Meera Bhawan. The institute also has one more hostel for parents and guests named after saints, scientists, and historical and religious figures. There is a common kitchen cum mess unit for every set of two boys’ hostels. Each unit of the mess serves vegetarian and non-vegetarian food and the unit operates under the management of different students’ committees. The girls’ hostel, however, has a separate mess of its own, situated within the boundary of the hostel.

 

BITS Pilani, Pilani Campus is located in the Vidya Vihar campus adjacent to Pilani town in Jhunjhunu district, in Rajasthan. Pilani is the home town of the Birla family and has a population of about 50,000. It is about 200 km west of Delhi and about 220 km north of Jaipur. The Institute buildings, hostels and residential quarters for staff with neatly laid out roads, lawns and gardens constitute the BITS Campus of about 240 acres.
