Birla Institute of Technology (BIT), Mesra is a private deemed university in Jharkhand, India. It was founded in 1955 by B M Birla, a renowned visionary and industrialist. The institute was later headed by G.P Birla and the present chairman of the board of governors is C.K Birla. It was declared as a deemed university under Section 3 of the UGC Act.
BIT has been accredited by the National Assessment & Accreditation Council (NAAC) and the National Board of Accreditation (NBA) and is considered as one of the premier engineering destinations in India.
BIT Mesra’s campus recruitment programme is organised as a centralised activity for all BIT campuses across the country i.e. Jaipur, Kolkata, Noida and Patna.
Set on 780 acres of land, BIT Mesra is a fully residential campus, providing accommodation to approximately 3200 undergraduate and postgraduate students and 2000 members of the faculty and staff. The main building accommodates lecture halls, research and training laboratories, library, administrative offices etc. covering an area of 30,000 sq. mts. while the workshop annexure has a covered area of 4,000 sq. mts. The laboratories and offices of the Department of Space Engineering & Rocketry comprise a sub-campus that is some distance away from the main building for reasons of security.
The campus has vast expanse of green dotted with facilities for cultural, recreational and sports activities. The campus is in every sense a melting pot for diverse interests, influences and cultures that blend to create the unique strength that represents BIT Mesra.
In addition to on-campus hostel arrangements, students have access to plenty of facilities for learning, recreation as well as sports activities within the grounds of BIT Mesra. Facilities include two auditoriums that can accommodate as many as 2,500 people. This is an ideal venue for cultural events organized by the student community. The Institute has a well-appointed gymnasium, indoor game facilities and extensive playgrounds for pursuing various outdoor sports. The campus also has two canteens and several other eating options within the premises. In addition, the Institute maintains three Guest Houses for accommodating guests appropriately.
The BITS Mesra campus also houses a shopping complex comprising co-operative stores, stationery shops and tailoring units, an on-campus dispensary and a campus health centre to ensure the students’ health and well-being.

Among engineering colleges, Birla Institute of Technology, Mesra ranked 17th by India Today in 2020, 26th by Outlook India and 16th by The Week in 2019. It was ranked 38th among engineering colleges in India by the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) in 2020, 66th among universities and 85th overall. NIRF has also ranked BIT Mesra 16th in the pharmacy ranking and 58th in the management ranking.
The college has also been ranked among the top 20 private engineering colleges in the Education World India Engineering Colleges Rankings 2020-21.
The fully residential campus offers 11 hostels for boys and three separate hostels for girls. Male students are housed in single accommodation while the girls share their accommodation. There are facilities for dining halls, common rooms and several indoor games.
Inter-hostel sporting and literary events are also held regularly.
