The Calcutta High Court has transferred an SIT probe into alleged irregularities by RG Kar Medical College and Hospital’s former Principal Sandip Ghosh to the Central Bureau of Investigation.
A single bench of Justice Rajarshi Bharadwaj was taking up a plea by Akhtar Ali, former deputy superintendent at RG Kar who alleged that he had previously filed several complaints against Ghosh before state authorities. However, all of it had gone unheard of and no action had been taken. He submitted that only after the horrifying rape and death of the doctor, the state took cognizance and constituted the SIT.
Notably, the CBI is also investigating Ghosh over the rape-murder of a resident doctor at the hospital campus on 9th August.
In the earlier hearing, the Court had questioned why the State only initiated the SIT probe after the unfortunate incident on 9th August, when many complaints had been filed earlier.
In directing for the SIT’s probe to be transferred to the CBI, the Court held: “Subsequent to the hapless incident on 9th August, the inquiry into the same was transferred to the CBI. Multiple agencies investigating similar facts may lead to delays and inefficiencies due to the involvement of multiple parties. Therefore, the court directs that the SIT investigation into Sandip Ghosh be transferred to the CBI…the CBI may file a status report into the same on the next date of hearing.”
