What is Civil Engineering?

Civil Engineering is the discipline of engineering dealing with the design, construction and maintenance of physically and naturally built environments including public works like roads, bridges, dams, airports, structural components of buildings and railways and the development of other infrastructure projects. Civil Engineering can fall in the public sector ranging from municipal public works departments to federal government agencies as well as the private sector from locally based firms to globally established companies.

Job Description

  • Responsibilities of a civil engineer include managing, designing, developing, creating and maintaining various construction and development projects in a safe, timely and sustainable manner
  • Conducting on-site inspections and analysing data
  • Undertaking technical and feasibility studies and monitoring technical specifications
  • Assessing the sustainability and environmental impact of projects
