Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) officials have announced changes to the exam format for Classes 11 and 12 starting from the 2024-25 session. According to the officials, the exams will now include more competency-based questions, focusing on the application of concepts in real-life situations.
The percentage of competency-focused questions, including MCQs, case-based questions, and source-based integrated questions, has been increased from 40 to 50 percent. Meanwhile, the percentage of constructed response questions, such as short and long answers, has been reduced from 40 to 30 percent.
Joseph Emanuel, Director (Academics) at CBSE, highlighted that these changes align with the National Education Policy, 2020, aiming to shift away from rote memorization towards developing creative, critical, and systems thinking capacities in students.
Emanuel emphasized that CBSE is continuing to align assessments and evaluation practices with NEP-2020 for the academic session 2024-2025. Consequently, the percentage of competency-based questions assessing the application of concepts in real-life situations in board question papers has been adjusted.
However, there are no changes in the exam format for Classes 9 and 10.
