CBSE not to award divisions or distinctions in class 10 & 12 exams

December 1, 2023

The Central Board of Secondary Education has taken a significant step by deciding not to confer any division or distinction in the upcoming class 10 and 12 board exams, according to CBSE Examination Controller Sanyam Bhardwaj’s announcement on Friday. Bhardwaj made it clear that no overall division, distinction, or aggregate of marks would be awarded. In instances where candidates have offered more than five subjects, the decision regarding the best five subjects will be left to the discretion of the admitting institution or employer.

Furthermore, Bhardwaj highlighted that the Board will not engage in the calculation, declaration, or communication of the percentage of marks. If the need for percentage calculation arises for higher education or employment purposes, the responsibility will lie with the admitting institution or employer. This aligns with CBSE‘s earlier move to eliminate the practice of issuing merit lists, a strategic measure aimed at discouraging unhealthy competition among students. The Board’s decisions underscore a commitment to fair evaluation practices and an emphasis on individual subject proficiency rather than overall divisions or distinctions.
