Chandigarh University International Film Festival kicks off with over 350 films

August 23, 2024

“Technology can enhance filmmaking but cannot replace human expertise,” remarked BN Vichar, a renowned Indian art director, at the Chandigarh University International Film Festival 2024 (CUIFF’24), which began on August 22nd. The two-day festival, held at Chandigarh University in Gharuan, features over 350 films, including 12 international entries across various categories.

The festival is hosted by Chandigarh University’s Department of Animation in collaboration with Vancouver Film School, Canada’s leading entertainment arts institution. Among the films being showcased are 100 short films, 25 experimental films, 50 documentaries, 50 2D and 3D animation films, 25 VFX films, and 80 showreels.

During a session on the “Symbiosis of Script, Art, and Production in Film and Animation,” Vichar emphasized the importance of continuous skill development for aspiring art directors, despite advancements in AI. He noted that while AI eases the workload and enhances storytelling, the core artistry remains irreplaceable.

Lalita Deopa, CEO of Prismart Productions, addressed the concerns around AI in animation, stating that while AI simplifies tasks, human creativity and input are essential, especially in delivering socially relevant content for children.

Screenwriter Angelene Kaur likened AI to an assistant, affirming that while technology aids the process, it cannot generate the unique characters that writers create. She encouraged students to seize opportunities that help refine their writing skills, emphasizing the importance of connecting with and relating to their characters.

Day 2 of the festival will feature appearances by prominent figures such as Rohit Tiwari, known for his roles in “Mirzapur” and “Saheb, Biwi Aur Gangster,” Ashish Kulkarni, Chairman of FICCI for the AVGC Forum, and Sanjay Khimesara, President of Asifa India.
