Christian Medical College, Vellore (CMC Vellore) is a private, Christian community-run medical school, research institute, and one of the most prominent medical centers in India founded by Dr. Ida Sophia Scudder in 1900 as a one-bed clinic. In 1902, it was upgraded from a one-bed clinic to a 40-bed hospital. By 1909, it included the School of Nursing and, in 1918, a medical school for women was opened under the name Missionary Medical School for Women.
The medical school was upgraded to a university affiliated medical college offering the MBBS degree in 1942, under the name Christian Medical College. The college started admitting men in 1947.
The college is affiliated with the Dr MGR Medical University offering over 175 different post graduate and Ph.D. courses to the 2,600 students enrolled annually in medical, nursing and allied health discipline, while the hospital now caters to over 8000 outpatients and 2000 inpatients daily, housing 67 wards, 92 clinics and over 150 departments/units.
Sited on a 200-acre wooded site at the foot of College Hill in Vellore, CMC is a residential college housing residential facilities for students and staff and classrooms running through serene corridors, guest houses, playing fields and research and teaching facilities.
Built in 1932, the Bagayam campus has the Women’s and Men’s Hostels for MBBS students, the Fitch Hostel for Allied Health women students, the Dorothy Joske Hostel for Allied Health men students and the Modale International Hostel for elective/visitor-observer students from overseas. Besides the medical libraries, the Chaplaincy Department maintains libraries on campus and anyone can borrow religious and general books and magazines.
The campus houses facilities for various games and athletics, including a gymnasium. A large playground for athletics, football, hockey and cricket is located at one end of the campus. There are two state-of-the-art outdoor basketball courts and basketball continues to be the one of the most popular games in the campus. Volleyball courts, indoor shuttle courts and two tennis courts are also available. Hostel facilities are provided to majority of the students (MBBS and BSc Nursing programmes are fully residential; others allow day scholars). They are equipped with wide-ranging facilities such as common rooms and gymnasia.
The Women’s Hostel, that was opened in 1932, is steeped in history and was one of the earliest buildings built in the College Campus. The Women’s Hostel is run by the Women’s Hostel Association, and includes facilities such as a gymnasium – a gift from the alumni of the batch of 1985 – and a lower and upper common room.
The men’s hostel, built much later, in the year 1953, to accommodate male medical students, is run by the Men’s Hostel Association. It is across the road from the Main Campus.
