The University Grants Commission (UGC) is keen to expand the scope of the Common University Entrance Test for undergraduates (CUET-UG) beyond the mandated 45 central universities. The UGC has appealed to all state government run public universities, colleges and private universities to adopt the CUET 2022 as the common entrance test for undergraduate courses for the academic year 2022-23.
The UGC believes, with CUET-UG becoming the common mode of admission for all undergraduate courses across all higher educational institutions in the country, students would not have to take multiple entrance tests at different times. The move would also provide a level playing field to students from different boards.
In a letter addressed to university vice-chancellors, directors and college principals, the UGC states, “Many state universities, deemed-to-be-universities, private universities and other higher education institutions (HEIs) in the country also use either marks of 12th board or conduct entrance test for admission in UG programmes. To save students from appearing in multiple entrance examinations, conducted on different dates, sometimes coinciding with each other, and to also provide equal opportunity to all students from different boards, the UGC invites and encourages all state universities and other HEIs to adopt and use CUET score from 2022-23 onwards for admissions of students in their UG programmes.”
Eight deemed-to-be-universities that receive UGC grants have already expressed their interest in admitting undergrad students on the basis of CUET scores. On Monday (March 28), M Jagadesh Kumar UGC chairman held a meeting with the vice-chancellors and directors of several deemed-to-be-universities including the Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS), Jamia Hamdard, Delhi and Ramakrishna Vivekananda Educational Research Institute, Kolkata.
