The Deccan College Post-Graduate and Research Institute, Pune is the third oldest educational institute in India. It was promoted in 1821 as the Hindoo College by the Bombay Presidency Government at the initiative of its governor, Mountstuart Elphinstone by using the Dakshina Fund, which was started by Khanderao Dabhade, a Maratha Sardar and continued by the Peshwas for propagating Sanskrit studies.
The university’s mission is to provide an exceptionally conducive learning environment that prepares students for meaningful personal lives, professional achievements and responsible global citizenship.
Sprawled across 115 acres, the university campus houses a main Gothic style building constructed in 1864 and several other buildings around the main building which are used for various purposes.
The verdant campus houses separate buildings for each department, a well-equipped library, study rooms, student’s hostels, mess, gymkhana, a recreational centre and residential quarters for staff. Other facilities include a well-furnished convocation hall, examination hall, two museums and common rooms for ladies. Complementary ramps with railings are installed in all the buildings for differently-abled visitors.
The university has three departments -Archaeology, AIHC and Linguistics, and Sanskrit & Lexicography.
