Delhi: 12,000 chalkboards in MCD-Run schools replaced with whiteboards

July 17, 2024

The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has replaced more than 12,000 blackboards with whiteboards at a cost of about Rs 41.5 crore, according to a civic body official.

This initiative is part of a broader effort to modernize infrastructure in MCD-operated schools across 12 zones. Additionally, approximately 25,700 magnetic whiteboard erasers and dusters, along with over one lakh water-based whiteboard markers, have been provided to the schools.

Last year, the civic body issued a tender for the installation of whiteboards and provision of markers and magnetic dusters. Installation was completed by June this year, costing approximately Rs 41.5 crore as per official records.

Across different zones, the MCD has installed 1,925 whiteboards in South Delhi, 1,540 in Rohini, 468 in City-SP, 1,484 in West Delhi, 1,056 in Central Delhi, and 994 in Keshavpuram zones. In other zones, including Shahdara North (194), Shahdara South (190), Nazafgarh (1,349), Civil Lines (1,305), Karol Bagh (587), and Narela (1,788), additional whiteboards were also installed.

Previously, many MCD schools had blackboards or chalkboards, which were difficult to clean and produced chalk dust. The MCD manages a total of 1,535 schools across 1,185 sites in Delhi’s 12 zones, catering to approximately 8.5 lakh students.
